Mayo Concert Orchestra brings its impressive musical talents to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for two nights on Monday May 11 and Tuesday May 12 at 8pm.

Ines Wurth brings her spellbinding one-woman show I Miss Communism to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday May 13 at 8pm.

Paintings by young artists from Scoil Raifteiri, Cornanool National School and Snugboro National School will feature in a prestigious art exhibition at this year’s internationally recognised Belfast Children’s Festival taking place in May, with an expected audience of some 10,000 people. The works were created as part of the Linenhall Arts Centre’s visual art programme for Schools. Orla Henihan, arts access officer at the Linenhall Arts Centre, said: “We have always known that fabulous art works are created during our visual art programme for schools workshops. We are absolutely delighted that we now have the chance to show some of them off!” The 21 self-portraits by the budding Mayo artists were chosen by the University of Ulster and the Belfast Children’s Festival from schools, groups, and organisations from across Ireland to be part of the festival’s More of it than we think exhibition.

Drums/percussion, vocals, and guitar workshops for aspiring young musicians (10-18 years) take place during the Guinness Castlebar Blues Festival in association with JABACC (Jazz and Blues Appreciation Club, Castlebar) on Saturday May 30.

The one and only Des Keogh delivers a one-man delight of comedy theatre in Confessions of an Irish Publican at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday June 8 and Tuesday June 8 at 8pm. Based on the work of one of Ireland’s best known storytellers John B. Keane’s Confessions of an Irish Publican, the lives of the inhabitants of Knockanee are brilliantly evoked in a tour de force performance by Des Keogh. Having premiered off-Broadway at New York’s Irish Rep Theatre, this hilarious one-man show sees the incomparable Des Keogh switch from character to character as he brings the play and its characters to life. Natural Rhythms is the title of a new exhibition of prints by Linda Hunt opening at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Friday July 3. The exhibition comprises a suite of limited edition collograph and dry point prints created by artist Linda Hunt in response to her experience of landscape, seascape, natural forms, and shapes. In the words of the artist herself, "Process is an important element in making the work and it is one of continuous discovery and communication with the medium. I like the contrast the medium provides between definite forms and shapes and more nebulous qualities. Fluidity, line, layering, and texture are all important elements in this process as are spatial relationships. Colour is rooted in natural sources and is both animated and subdued." Thus, says Linda, the resulting works "observe the formal elements of visual rhetoric and reflect my personal connection with my immediate environment." The exhibition runs until Saturday August 1.
